Strawberry Boosts Heart Health
Previous studies have suggested that strawberry powder helps to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and improve the LDL-to-HDL profile. Susan J. Zunino, from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Western Human Nutrition Research Center (California, USA), and colleagues completed a study involving 20 obese but otherwise healthy subjects, ages 20 to 50 years.
As a follow-up to a study that showed that rose hip (Rosa canina) extract both prevented and reversed high-fat diet-induced obesity and glucose intolerance, as well as reduced plasma levels of cholesterol, in a lab animal model, C Holm, from Lund University (Sweden), and colleagues investigated the effects of a six-week long daily intake of rose hip powder on the metabolic profile among obese men and women.
A rise in blood pressure during middle age significantly raises the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke during a person’s lifetime, report Northwestern University School of Medicine (Illinois, USA) researchers. Previous estimates of a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease were based on a single blood pressure measurement.: the higher the blood pressure reading, the greater the risk. Norrina Allen and colleagues analyzed data from 61,585 participants in the Cardiovascular Lifetime Risk Pooling Project.
Previously, studies have suggested a role for calcium and vitamin D supplementation to promote healthy weight. Lee M Kaplan, from Massachusetts General Hospital (Massachusetts, USA), and colleagues enrolled 171 overweight/obese men and women, average age 40 years, in a 16 week long parallel, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The test groups consumed three 240 mL glasses of a regular or light orange juice per day.
"Mindfulness" exercises, which focus on experiencing the present moment, no matter how difficult, can help curb the stress and fatigue associated with painful rheumatoid joint disease. Heidi A Zangi, from Diakonhjemmet Hospital (Sweden), and colleagues enrolled 73 men and women, ages 20 to 70 years, all of whom had had painful joint disease, caused by rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or psoriatic arthritis for at least a year.
